Rockford Road Runners
Minutes - January 3, 2008
Stockholm Inn
I. The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by President Larry Ward.
II. Minutes – As December’s meeting was a holiday celebration, there were no minutes.
III. Treasurer’s Report – Glenn Greenberg reported a balance of $9,794.38 as of November 30, 2007. A detailed treasurer’s report is available for members interested in reviewing it.
IV. President’s Remarks
A. Larry introduced Tim Sievers who is now serving the club as communications chair.
B. From past experience at races that included a number of walkers, Larry suggested that races have two starts – one for runners and one for walkers that would be 30 minutes before the running race. This way, both walkers and runners could finish at approximately the same time. It also might serve as encouragement for more walkers to participate in races. He also suggested different numbers for each group.
V. Vice-President
A. Larry Swanson reported that there was interest in club clothing. From the survey held at the December meeting, it appeared that two items were suggested most often: a pullover or jacket which could be worn for various activities and a racing singlet which would be worn at races. A design with the Rockford Road Runner logo and Rockford, Illinois will be needed. This project will be pursued.
B. Larry also noted that members wanted something to identify RRR volunteers at races that would be distinctive and economical. A hat was suggested. This, too, will be pursued.
VI. Race Coordinator
A. Steve Korn noted that the 2008 RRR Race Circuit will remain virtually the same as in 2007. The Severson Dells race will be moved to June so as not to compete with the Kennedy run. The Janesville race, directed by Tim Rudder, also will be added.
B. The Red Shoe race location is moving to the Northern Illinois University Rockford campus.
C. A race directors’ clinic will be held on a Sunday in late February.
VII. Communications Chair
A. Tim Sievers will publish the February newsletter. He welcomes all contributions whether they be electronic or on paper.
VIII: Membership
A. Kathleen Yarger said she is working on renewals and membership cards. The cards should go out soon. She noted that membership retention has been good the past year.
IX. New Business
A. Glenn Greenberg noted that the club’s 40th anniversary is this year and should be celebrated. Bob Sharp and Henry Gallenz are planning the event and would like some volunteers to join them. Glenn and Rose Austin volunteered and Gerrie Gustafson also noted she could assist. A date and site is needed. The event will include music.
B. Larry Swanson said he had met with Adam Smith from the mayor’s office. Smith is in charge of encouraging an expansion of activities for young people. A new track and field program, Rockford Fire, is being presented which will replace the Ben Newson program. It is being done in cooperation with the Rockford Park District. It will include three levels: 1. an introduction to running for those new to the sport; 2. a program for more experienced runners who will run at state and local races; 3. a program for elite athletes who will compete on a national level. Fees will be involved but will on a sliding scale for those who have limited means. The program will be held in June and July. Mike Mapes added that training sites will be at Lutheran, Christian Life and Auburn High Schools. Staff will include two head coaches and six assistant coaches, all paid positions. There will be a web site which can be linked to the club’s and to the Wildcats’ web site. Mike also suggested to the program planners that it be expanded in the future to include college-age and other adults.
C. Mike Mapes encouraged race directors to include races of “friendly” distances if they want the Wildcats to participate. Because of the youngsters’ ages and experience, races under a 5k are the best. Races also are best if held in spring and early summer.
D. Discussion ensued about the club’s going to not-for-profit and/or 501 3c status. One of the positive reasons for going to this status is to encourage donations to both the Wildcats and to the Rockford Road Runners. After lengthy discussion, it was suggested that more information is needed. Gerrie Gustafson volunteered to call a lawyer who can provide the membership with more information.
X. Announcements
A. Gerrie Gustafson announced that the 24th Annual OSF Heritage Run will be held Sunday, April 27.
B. The February meeting will be held Wednesday, February 6, at the Stockholm Inn.
XI. Adjournment – The meeting was adjourned at 8:13 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Gerrie Gustafson
