Rockford Road Runners
Minutes - April 2, 2008
Stockholm Inn
I. The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by President Larry Ward.
II. Minutes – The March meeting minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter and presented on the club web site.
III. Treasurer’s Report – Glenn Greenberg reported a balance of $10,370.63 as of February 29. A detailed treasurer’s report is available for members interested in reviewing it.
IV. President’s Remarks
A. Larry Ward said that the early start for walkers would be used at the Arny Johnson run Saturday. It will provide a good time to judge how the early start system works.
B. Mileage markings will be refreshed on the various paths.
C. Because Ian Linnaberry was unable to attend the meeting and because more information on not-for-profit status will be available after the Road Runners Club of American (RRCA) convention, the not-for-profit issue will be discussed at the May meeting.
D. Timing equipment has been recommended by the RRCA. A road trip to Peoria to see the equipment in action is being planned. The equipment costs $7,000 but would be worth it if it is easy to use by circuit race directors.
V. Vice-President
A. Larry Swanson noted that the current issue of “Chicago Athlete” focuses on “green” races. The race at Severson Dells last summer was a green race and will be run that way again. It is on the 2008 RRR race circuit. He urged race directors to consider incorporating more environmental friendly aspects in their races.
B. There will be a trail work day at Rock Cut on April 6 to assist in setting posts and marking the trails.
C. The Trail Series is complete and 327 runners participated; 91 finished all four races.
D. Extra April newsletters were printed and were sent to Trail Series participants who are not members. These newsletters also will be available at various races to encourage new Road Runner members. Bob Sharp asked where extra newsletters were generally available. This will be investigated. Larry also proposed brochures on RRR and Wildcats be placed in new shoe purchases at Runners Image. Bob said that RRR information is usually given to those people purchasing shoes who are not already members.
E. Larry proposed that June and September Road Runner meetings be held in the Lone Rock Café at Rock Cut. July and August meetings would be held at either the Lions Shelter or Puri Crest. The Puri Crest location could be the site of a picnic with games, etc.
VI. Race Coordinator – no report
VII. Communications Chair – no report
VIII: Membership
A. Kathleen Yarger noted that the RRR executive committee voted to use Active.com for new and renewal memberships. This should encourage more memberships.
B. Kathleen noted that she and Carol Bingley are working on a new RRR brochure.
IX. Old Business
A. Henry Gallenz reported that a committee has met to discuss plans for the 40th club anniversary celebration. Various sites are being reviewed and tentative dates are September 20 or September 27. After discussion, it was decided that September 27 might be a better date since the 2008 Trail Run will be held September 20 and 21. Sites being reviewed are Giovanni’s and the new restaurant at Anderson Gardens. Henry requested the assistance of a “younger” member and Joyce Saarinen volunteered. The committee is also looking for suggestions for music, either a live band or DJ. Glenn Greenberg also noted that the club would probably finance a favor or souvenir for those attending the event and a few nice door prizes.
B. Gary McIntyre from Rockford Area Transportation System (RATS) was present and was asked about paths on the west side of Rockford, eg. Pecatonica and Winnebago. He noted that issues arise because these paths are in various jurisdictions. He noted that an extension to the Rock Cut Path toward Roscoe is under consideration. Submissions for path extensions are due in May.
C. Bob Sharp praised the April newsletter as one of the best even done. It was noted that Carol Bingley contributed significantly to the issue. Those receiving the newsletter by e-mail can view the photos in color.
