John Ferguson
I started running 3 years ago when I turned 50. I needed to
lose weight and be more active.
Shawn runs too fast for any of us to keep up. We do run and
meet at a particular time based on our speed. I like to run with Janelle. She is
faster than me but we do run together. We often run in races all year long.
Despite our busy schedules we do eat together. I love to
discuss running, especially at the dinner table. Janice is wonderful at
preparing healthy meals for all of us.
The people I've met in running are wonderful and I'm glad
to know them.
I have always encouraged everyone to be supportive of each
other. I tell both of my children that running can be a lifelong activity. It
helps you keep your weight down and builds up endurance.
My advise to other families is don't push your kids into
sports and avoid the high expectations. My philosophy is encourage your children
to participate and to complete the program. If they don't like it they can try
something else. I want my children to love what they are doing and they do. We
are a close family, but running has help cement our relationships.

I began running 4 years ago with the Wildcats. I was
helping the younger runners.
Sometimes I ride my bicycle while Shawn is running. Janelle
will slow her pace to run with me, or sometimes I'll roller blade with her.
I attend Shawn's Auburn meets and Janelle's Wildcat Meets.
I often volunteer as time keeper or coarse marshal.
As a family we discuss running and support the children's
activities.
Running is a healthy activity; it does not cost much money
compared to other sports.
Running is one more activity that our family shares an
interest.
We don't need to encourage our kids to run; if anything
they encourage us.
