Sherri Miosi, 36

Coyote name: Vanna

Paralegal

I started running in July, 2003. I had always been involved in different sports such as volleyball and biking, but I decided after a vacation with my then boyfriend, Vince Miosi (now my husband), that I would try running. He was already a runner at that time. I could barely run a 1/4 of a mile before I had to quit because of my breathing. I stuck with it and it became a challenge to go further each time I ran.

If I couldn't run, I would take classes and use the cardio machines. I may even get back into rollerblading or biking.

My favorite run is one that gets my endorphins going. My legs feel so strong and light. When I kick it in, it feels like my feet are not touching the ground and I feel like I am flying.

Something most people don't know about me is that I grew up on a farm in a very small town Southwest of Freeport, named Chadwick. There is no organized running in that area. We did have cross country, but it was mostly males that participated.

My favorite thing to do after a hard workout is take a hot shower and drink a lime G2. I think about the run and decide if I felt good about it or if I need to do better next time.

When I am not running, I like to travel with Vince, hang out with friends and family, lift weights, garden, read, bake, watch the Chicago Bears and listen to music (a rock concert anyone?).

It is hard to pick one local runner that I admire the most. The local running community is wonderful. Everyone supports one another. There is so much encouragement and enthusiasm between runners. No one is made to feel less of a runner based on their ability. Encouragement is abundant and spread throughout everyone.

If I feel like I can't make it through a run, I just talk myself through it and go quarter by quarter. It is much easier to run with other runners and encourage one another to keep going. Who wants to run 10 or 12 miles by yourself all of the time?

My greatest running accomplishment so far has been the 2008 Hobo 25K. Before that, I had never run over 10 miles. I trained at Rock Cut on the weekends, but I had never actually run the whole course at one time. That was my longest run ever. Without Denise and Steve to get me through it, I would not have made it.

My next goal is the Rockford Half Marathon. I am already close to running the distance, I just have to get my speed up to the time I would like to finish.

My advice to other runners is don't give up and push yourself a little more each time. If your body is physically telling you to hold back or risk injury... hold back. You don't want to not be able to run at all due to an injury.

I plan to run until I am physically unable to do so. With all of the medical advances we are seeing, you can fight it every step (stride) of the way.
